Starting tomorrow (23 Aug 2008) I begin a new academic career at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College (http://reynolds.edu). I’m excited and nervous, but mostly excited.
I’m going to pursue, in a part-time manner, an Associate of Applied Arts Degree in Music. The curriculum is also online. For this semester, Fall 2008, I’m taking two classes: MUS 111, Music Theory I and MUS 121, Music Appreciation I. The semester is from 25 August until 20 December. My MUS 121 class is on Online Course. My MUS 111 is a traditional, instructor-led course occurring twice a week: Mondays and Wednesdays, from 10:00 to 12:00.
Why am I going to back to school? and to study Music? A couple of reasons. The primary reason is the inspiration I’ve received watching my wife pursue her Nursing degree; learning is so much fun and I’ve had a blast watching and helping my wife. The second reason: I love music as much as I love technology. I’ve been fortunate enough to make a pretty good living from my love of technology and software development. This music degree is for fun, a chance to learn more about another hobby of mine.
I’ll try to keep a record of my college travels. Wish me luck!
Cheers!

Cool news Mel! One of the best decisions in my life was going back to school several years ago. I’m not finished with school yet, and while there you might surprise yourself and find that there’s something you want to study more than what you planned on.
Life and school are like that sometimes
